Villarreal Club de Fútbol, commonly known as Villarreal CF or simply Villarreal, is one of Spanish football’s most remarkable modern success stories. Founded in 1923 and based in the small town of Vila-real in the province of Castellón, the club has risen from the lower leagues to become a regular contender in European competitions. Nicknamed "El Submarino Amarillo" (The Yellow Submarine) due to their yellow kit and underdog spirit, Villarreal has gained respect across Europe for their attractive style of play and consistent success on the continental stage.
Villarreal tickets are especially sought after for European nights and La Liga matches against Spain’s elite. Fans from around the world travel to Estadio de la Cerámica to witness the passion and pride that define this ambitious club.
Historic Villarreal Moments
Villarreal’s rise began in earnest in the late 1990s when the club earned promotion to La Liga for the first time in 1998. Although relegated shortly after, they bounced back and gradually established themselves in the top tier. The early 2000s saw Villarreal evolve into a serious European contender, reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2004 and the UEFA Champions League in 2006, where they narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a dramatic tie with Arsenal.
The pinnacle of their history came in 2021 when Villarreal won their first major European trophy. The club defeated Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League Final after a marathon penalty shootout, securing a historic and emotional triumph for the town and its fans.

Memorable Moments
The 2021 UEFA Europa League Final in Gdańsk will forever be etched in Villarreal’s history. After a 1–1 draw in regulation and extra time, the match went to penalties. In a dramatic shootout that ended 11–10, goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli scored the winning spot-kick before saving from his Manchester United counterpart. It was a night of glory for Villarreal, lifting their first major trophy and showcasing their ability to overcome giants on the European stage.
Another memorable moment came during the 2005–06 Champions League campaign, where Villarreal reached the semi-finals. Led by a group of technically gifted players, they stunned Europe by defeating clubs like Inter Milan. Only a missed penalty in the dying moments of the second leg against Arsenal denied them a place in the final, but the run remains a symbol of their meteoric rise.
Stadium Atmosphere
Estadio de la Cerámica, formerly known as El Madrigal, is one of the most distinctive and intimate stadiums in La Liga. With a capacity of just over 23,000, it provides an up-close and passionate footballing experience. Despite the club’s small-town origins, the stadium often generates an atmosphere that rivals Spain’s largest grounds.
On matchdays, the town of Vila-real comes alive as locals and travelling fans fill the streets. Supporters chant and wave yellow flags in unison, creating a visually striking and energetic environment. European nights in particular bring a sense of occasion and pride that reflects the club’s extraordinary journey.
